Ylläsjärvi or Äkäslompolo?

If you are coming to Ylläs for the very first time, you might be wondering which village to stay in, Ylläsjärvi or Äkäslompolo. There is no simple answer, and it depends a lot on what you want from your vacation. Wherever you decide to stay, you will surely get a wonderful and authentic experience.

Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi are authentic Lappish villages. The villages are located on both sides of Yllästunturi and both villages have a ski center. With a ski pass, you can ski over the fell to the other side. In both villages, both the trail network and skiing opportunities are excellent. In general, Ylläsjärvi has become known more for its slopes and Äkäslompolo for its cross-country skiing trails.

Basic services are good on both sides, e.g. grocery stores, restaurants, sports equipment rentals and excursion and safari companies can be found in both villages. The services in Äkäslompolo are slighlty more versatile and concentrated than in Ylläsjärvi. The village of Ylläsjärvi was awarded as the Lappish Village of the Year in 2020.

Wherever you decide to stay, we definitely recommend visiting both villages. From one village to another, the 15 km long Scenic Road runs along the edge of the fell, with wonderful landscapes, as the name suggests. The Scenic Route also has a parking lot for taking pictures or, for example, for a picnic.
