Kesänkijärvi ‒ a lake nestled by the fells
Lake Kesänki, located in Äkäslompolo, is an easily accessible destination for everyone. You can reach it by bike, skis, stroller (in summer), or even by sled. The beautiful lake scenery and Kesänkitunturi fell are visible right from the parking area (Sahatie, 95970 Kolari). As you walk along the path, you might be lucky enough to meet Siberian jays. These birds are not afraid of people, so it’s a good idea to keep a few nuts or a piece of bread in your pocket. Simply extend your hand towards the jays, and they’ll fly right to you to eat the treats. This moment is perfect for capturing a photo or video. You’re even more certainly to see these birds when you reach the lean-to shelter at Lake Kesänki. From there, you can enjoy a stunning view of Kesänkitunturi and the lake. Near the lean-to shelter, there’s also a café where you can warm up during the cold winter months.
Pakasaivo ‒ the mystique of a ravine lake
About 12 kilometers from Äkäslompolo in the direction of Kolari, you’ll see a sign on the right for “Pakasaivo.” After turning onto the gravel road, continue for another 12 kilometers, and you’ll arrive at your destination.
Pakasaivo is also known as the “Hell of Lapland.” It features a ravine lake approximately one kilometer long, which is located in a steep ravine. The view is impressive. During the summer, you can walk around Pakasaivo, although the trail can be challenging.
From the parking area, there’s a 0.5-kilometer accessible walking path, making Pakasaivo a great destination for both the youngest and oldest family members. You’ll find a fire pit, a wood shed, and a dry toilet at Pakasaivo.
Ylläs Swing ‒ swing embraced by the fells
From Äkäslompolo, you can find the popular “social media swing” by following the road from Jounin Kauppa towards the lakeshore. There are signs near the store’s parking area to guide you, or you can search for “Ylläs Swing” on Google to find your way. The swing is located right by the lake in a picturesque spot surrounded by fells. It’s available year-round and is a popular photography location in Äkäslompolo.
Äkäslompolo lake and the area around the swing are excellent places for spotting the Northern Lights, whether in the dimming evenings of autumn or the clear, frosty nights of winter!
Yllästunturi ‒ scenic gondola rides and frosty photo spots
At Ylläsjärvi, you’ll find a convenient gondola lift that operates year-round (except in stormy weather, thunder and lightning). The gondola is the easiest way to reach the top of Ylläs fell and enjoy the view of the seven surrounding fells. You don’t need skiing equipment; just buy a ticket for the scenic ride and hop on! Dogs are also allowed in the gondola.
At the summit, you’ll find a café (check the opening hours) and a swing, which is beautifully covered in frosty snow during winter. The summit offers stunning views in all directions. In winter, you can see a breathtaking sunset from the top, which is truly indescribable.
Pirunkuru ‒ a challenging but worthwhile effort
The beautiful yet rugged Pirunkuru, located in Äkäslompolo, offers an incredible experience for photographers. The trail begins at the Kesänkijärvi parking lot with an easy walk along a relaxed path towards the Kesänkijärvi lean-to shelter. Once the path turns into the gorge, the most challenging and wothwhile part of the hike begins. Even seasoned athletes will work up a sweat, as the rough rocks underfoot make hikers feel truly alive. After climbing for a while, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the fells behind you. This stunning sight is worth experiencing in every season. The entire loop is 8 kilometers long and returns to the starting point.
Tuomikuru loop ‒ a varied trail suitable for families
The Tuomikuru loop is approximately 6 kilometers long and starts from the Ylläs Ski Resort grounds at Ylläsjärvi. The easiest way to access the trail is by following the signs from below the new pump track bicycle path. The initial part of the trail involves climbing up the fell, while the final part is a descent. Midway along the route, there is a scenic spot offering breathtaking views down into the valley. This viewpoint features outdoor toilets, a fire pit, a kota (traditional Finnish shelter), and a wood storage area. Everything is clean and well-maintained. The return journey takes you through lush forests, accompanied by the sound of beautiful fell streams.
Äkäsmylly ‒ the roar of the rapids beside the old mill
About 20 kilometers from Äkäslompolo towards Muonio, you’ll find a parking area by the roadside (NOTE: it may not be plowed during winter). Leave your car in the parking lot and walk a few hundred meters along a forest trail. Äkäsmylly is easily accessible. Once you arrive, you’ll find the Äkäsjoki river and an old mill nearby. The river’s rapids are roaring, and the scenery is calming. This spot is excellent for photographers.
Kuerlinkat ‒ rapids in the heart of the forest
Kuerlinkat can be found on the Äkäslompolo side, about 7 kilometers from the village center. Kuerlinkat consists of two powerful waterfalls that form a roaring rapid. The river flows into the Äkäsjoki. The trail is challenging, with some steep sections, but the effort is rewarded at the end.
Maisematie ‒ a scenic route true to its name
Maisematie runs between Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, showcasing stunning landscapes just as its name suggests. If you’re a fan of Siberian jays and want to see and photograph them, drive to the rest area along Maisematie. This parking area frequently has Siberian jays looking for picnickers’ leftovers.
