What are the most popular summer activities in Ylläs?

Mar 25, 2025

The lush summer greenery of the fell landscapes offers a diverse environment for active holidays. Ylläs is known as a winter destination, but in summer, the area transforms into a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The most popular summer activities include hiking in the magnificent fell landscapes, diverse fell biking, paddling trips on clear waters, and trekking in the scenery of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. In addition, fishing, swimming, berry picking, mushroom foraging, and nature observation during the midnight sun are also popular. Many visitors are surprised by the diversity of Ylläs in summer and return year after year.

When is the best time to visit Ylläs in summer?

Ylläs’s summer divided into three distinct seasons, each with its own charm.

The early part of June offers the wonder of nature awakening and the magic of the midnight sun. During this time, one can fully enjoy the midnight sun, but it’s advisable to prepare for potentially cool nights and even patches of snow on higher fells.

The phenomenon of the midnight sun is worth experiencing from mid-June to mid-July, when the sun doesn’t set at all, and daylight continues throughout the night. This allows for engaging in activities at any time of the day.

July is traditionally the most popular vacation month, with temperatures at their best. During this period, lakes warm up enough for swimming, and all activities are in full swing.

Late August and early September offer the splendour of the autumn colours, when the fells are painted in golden and red hues. This is an especially beautiful time for hikers and photographers. Additionally, one can enjoy forest produce such as cloudberries, blueberries, lingonberries, and mushrooms. In early September, the term ‘ruska’ is used to describe this vibrant season, which is a popular time to visit the area.

How are hiking trails classified in Ylläs?

Ylläs’s hiking trails are clearly classified by difficulty level, helping everyone find a suitable challenge.

Easy Trails are suitable for beginners and families with children. Examples include the Varkaankuru Nature Trail (3 km) and the Kellostapuli Loop (5 km), which mostly run through flat terrain and are well-marked.

Moderate Trails offer more challenge with elevation changes. Popular moderate trails include Kuerlinkat (12 km) and the Kesänkijärvi Loop (17 km). These trails require good basic fitness and typically take 4–7 hours, depending on breaks and pace.

Challenging Trails like the Ylläs Summit (approximately 10 km with a steep ascent) and the full Pallas–Ylläs Trail (about 80 km) require hiking experience and good physical condition. These trails showcase the most stunning landscapes of Lapland’s national park but demand careful preparation.

For hikes, it’s advisable to bring a map, water, snacks, rain gear, and a charged phone. Many trailheads are located near our cabins, making it easy and convenient to start your hike.

Can you cycle in Ylläs also in summer?

Absolutely! The Ylläs area has developed into a significant summer cycling destination in recent years and now offers over 200 kilometers of marked fell biking trails. During summer, the ski resort slopes and cross-country skiing tracks transform into excellent cycling routes. Did you know that some of our cabins offer bicycles for guests to borrow during their stay? Learn more about cycling and its delights here!

For truly enthusiastic cyclists, the Ylläs-Levi MTB event is organized every summer, where participants ride from Ylläs to Levi or vice versa, with the direction alternating between even and odd years.

On the Ylläsjärvi side of the ski resort, the Bike Park offers varied downhill trails with lift access, catering especially to those seeking speed and excitement. For younger family members, there is a dedicated Pump Track where they can practice with balance bikes or scooters. Another Pump Track is located next to Eelin Kauppa by the shore of Ylläsjärvi, adjacent to the playground.

The rental of electric bikes has become increasingly common in the area, making it easier for less experienced cyclists to ascend the fells. Bikes can be rented from several local shops, many of which provide up-to-date cycling maps and route recommendations for different types of cyclists. The starting points of cycling routes are located near our accommodations, making it easy to begin your cycling adventure right from your cabin.

What kind of water activities can you enjoy in Ylläs?

The Ylläs area is renowned for its stunning waterways, offering a wide range of summer activities. On warm summer days, you can swim in the clear waters of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, both of which feature several beaches. As summer progresses, the water becomes warmer, making it even more enjoyable to take a dip. Spending time in the sauna followed by swimming is a must-try activity during the summer months. We recommend visiting Arctic Sauna World on the shores of Lake Jerisjärvi to experience various types of Finnish saunas.

Canoeing and kayaking are highly popular activities, with rivers like Äkäsjoki offering both calm and slightly faster-flowing sections. For beginners, guided canoeing trips are recommended and are organized by local companies. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has gained popularity, especially on the calm waters of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi.

The area’s rivers and lakes provide excellent fishing opportunities. Local fish species include pike, perch, whitefish, and grayling. Fishing permits can be purchased at local shops and tourist information centers.

Equipment rental shops are available in both Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, offering canoes, kayaks, SUP boards, and fishing gear for hire.

Summer activities in Ylläs for families – what to do with children?

Ylläs offers a lot for families with children during the summer season. The Kesänkijärvi nature trail is an excellent destination for families, as it is easy to walk and has informational signs along the way that explain the local nature in a way that children can understand. The trail is about 2.5 kilometers long and is suitable for even younger children. The Kesänkijärvi nature trail is also accessible with strollers. You may also often spot Siberian jays here, which children can feed, if they are brave enough.

The Ylläs area has several playgrounds, the largest of which are located near the villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. In Äkäslompolo, you’ll find playgrounds at Kellokas and Helukka. On the Ylläsjärvi side, the playground is located by the lake, right in the village center. All of the above-mentioned playgrounds have campfire sites nearby, making it easy to enjoy a picnic meal during your park visit.

One of children’s favorite activities is a gondola ride to the top of Ylläs. At the top, you can walk around and admire the views, or visit a restaurant for a meal. If you wish, you can hike down or take the gondola back. The gondola operates during the summer according to the Bike Park’s opening hours, but it’s always a good idea to check the current schedule.

On rainy days, you can visit Ylläs Saaga spa or spend the day at the indoor play park Peikonpesä, which is small and fairly modest, but still does the job.

If you’re up for a day trip, you can head to Levi’s Adventure Park, where you’ll find a climbing course, a play and traffic park, and other fun activities for families. Levi also has a spa and an indoor play park for children.

For those interested in animal encounters, Konijänkkä offers the chance to meet horses, reindeer, and participate in sled dog programs.

Our cabin accommodations are ideal for families, offering plenty of space and peace, along with the option for self-catering, which makes family holidays more convenient.
