What are the most popular summer activities in Ylläs?
The summer greenery of the fell landscapes offers a versatile environment for active vacations. Ylläs is known as a winter destination, but in summer the area transforms into a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The most popular summer activities definitely include hiking in magnificent fell landscapes, diverse mountain biking on a network that ranks among Finland’s best in terms of extent, paddling trips on crystal-clear waters, and trekking in the landscapes of Pallas-Ylläs National Park. In addition, fishing, berry picking, mushroom foraging, and nature observation during the nightless night are also popular. Many visitors are surprised by the diversity of Ylläs in summer and return year after year.
When is the best time to visit Ylläs in summer?
The summer in Ylläs is divided into three quite different seasons, each with its own charm. Early June offers the wonder of nature awakening and the magic of the nightless night. During this time, you can fully enjoy the midnight sun, but it’s good to be prepared for potentially cool nights and even patches of snow on higher fells.
July is traditionally the most popular vacation month, when temperatures are at their best. This is when lakes warm up enough for swimming, and all activities are in full operation. From mid-July to early August, several summer events are organized in Ylläs, such as music festivals and sports events.
Late August and early September offer the splendor of the autumn colors, when the fells are painted in golden and red hues. This is an especially beautiful time for hikers and photographers. Additionally, you can enjoy forest produce such as blueberries, lingonberries, and mushrooms. This is followed by a few weeks of peak fall colors, which is a popular time to visit the area.
The phenomenon of the nightless night is worth experiencing from mid-June to mid-July, when the sun doesn’t set at all, and daylight continues throughout the night. This makes it possible to enjoy activities at any time of day.
How are hiking trails classified in Ylläs?
Ylläs hiking trails are clearly classified according to difficulty level, which helps everyone find a suitable challenge. Easy routes are suitable for beginners and families with children. These include, for example, the Äkäslompolo Varkaankuru nature trail (3 km) and the Kellostapuli circuit (5 km), which mostly run through flat terrain and are well-marked.
Moderately challenging routes offer more challenge with elevation changes. Popular moderately challenging routes include the Kuerlinkat (12 km) and Kesänkijärvi circuit (17 km). These routes require good basic fitness and usually take 4-7 hours depending on breaks and pace.
Challenging routes such as summiting Ylläs (about 10 km, but with steep ascent) and the entire Pallas-Ylläs hiking trail (about 80 km) already require hiking experience and good physical condition. These routes showcase the most spectacular landscapes of Lapland’s national park, but they require careful preparation.
For hikes, it’s advisable to bring a map, water, snacks, rain gear, and a charged phone. Additional information and maps of the area’s routes are available at the AuroraCottage reception. There are several trailheads near our cottages, which makes it easy to start hiking.
